Traffic Insurance

Highway motor vehicle compulsory liability insurance, or simply traffic insurance , is insurance for cars, trucks, motorcycles and other road vehicles. The purpose of traffic insurance is to partially or completely cover the damage to the property or life of the "other party" in the event of an accident - depending on the degree of fault. The specific conditions of vehicle insurance may vary with legal regulations in each region.

Traffic Insurance is one of the most common types of insurance in Turkey. In accordance with the Highways Law No. 2918, it is mandatory for all motor vehicles on the road to have it done.[1] One of the documents expected to be found in vehicles during police checks is the traffic insurance policy.

Traffic Insurance is a liability insurance and covers material and physical damages caused by vehicles traveling on the road to third parties. It does not cover any damage caused by the person operating the vehicle to his or her own vehicle, and it does not replace car insurance. Traffic insurance does not cover non-pecuniary damage claims.

In Traffic Insurance, the insured person is the operator in accordance with the definition in the Highway Traffic Law. In Turkish law, the operator of the vehicle may be the owner of the vehicle or another person with a significant interest in the vehicle, such as a long-term renter. The name of the insured, who is the operating person, is stated on the policy.

Traffic insurance depends on the compulsory tariff. Coverage limit and advisory tariff premium are determined and published by the Insurance and Private Pension Regulation and Supervision Agency (SEDDK). Since 2009, insurance companies have been given freedom regarding the premiums to be paid, but not the guarantees. The premium varies depending on some factors such as the type of vehicle (car, motorcycle, bus, etc.), whether it is commercial or not, and the province in which it is registered. It is normally issued for one year and the premium is paid in advance. The traffic insurance policy also serves as a receipt. Traffic stamps, which must be issued together with the traffic policy, have been abolished since April 2011 due to instant tracking in the electronic central environment.
